It’s About You…Doing Cancer Your Way!
Guest Blog by “Jeremy Nicks” a cancer survivor who is doing it his way…with humor http://cheeruponline.blogspot.com
There are people who don’t agree with my approach to fighting cancer. I’ve had nurses, teachers, friends, and people who presume to know what’s best, caution me about taking this deadly disease to lightly. On more than one occasion well-intentioned individuals have offered me the phone number of their favorite psychiatrist who was sure to help me really deal with my situation and stop hiding behind the silliness. My answer was always the same. I am dealing and I’m not hiding.
The only way we lose the battle is if we lose the sense of who we are. Cancer may kill our cells but it cannot destroy our spirit unless we surrender it. I am a whacky individual and I pride myself in silver lining vision. Every trial we face has a hidden piece of positive and often, humorous treasure, if we’re willing to look for it. If I stopped seeing the bright side, I’d have ceased to be me and, in turn, would have lost the battle even before I lost my hair.
Not everyone is a humorist. You may be artistic, or the type who analyzes and sees the deep meaning in life. Maybe you’re a socialite who loves a good party. The point is that now, more than ever, you must fight to be you. Surviving chemo, radiation, or the various ______ectomies is just part of the battle. The war is won when you remember who you were before the needles, nausea, and the nastiness. So in the words of the great William Wallace (kind of), “Cheer up! Cancer may take away our hair, but cancer can never take our SPIRIT!!!”
